๐ŸŒŸ Grammar Lesson: Reported Speech (Indirect Speech)

Reported speech is used when we tell someone what another person said.
We usually change the tense and pronouns.


1️⃣ Changing Tenses in Reported Speech

  • Present → Past

    • Direct: She said, “I am tired.”

    • Reported: She said (that) she was tired.

  • Present Continuous → Past Continuous

    • Direct: He said, “I am reading.”

    • Reported: He said (that) he was reading.

  • Past Simple → Past Perfect

    • Direct: They said, “We visited Paris.”

    • Reported: They said (that) they had visited Paris.

  • Will → Would

    • Direct: She said, “I will call you.”

    • Reported: She said (that) she would call me.


2️⃣ Pronoun Changes

  • Direct: He said, “I love my dog.”

  • Reported: He said that he loved his dog.


3️⃣ Time Expressions Change

  • today → that day

  • tomorrow → the next day

  • yesterday → the day before

  • now → then
